We at St. Francis of Assisi Church rejoice that the US Senate and House of Representatives each voted this past week for June 19th of each year to be a declared a federal holiday. We further rejoice that President Biden has signed it into law. Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of freedom on June 19, 1865, by Union soldiers to African American slaves in Galveston Bay, TX. This was over two months after the end of the Civil War (April 9, 1865). It celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in the South (the Confederacy) to be free, went into effect on January 1, 1863. The 13th Amendment, however, which made slavery illegal in all the United States, took longer. It was passed by the Senate in April 1864 and then by the House of Representatives in January 1865, just four months before the end of the Civil War. It was signed by President Lincoln in February 1865 (who was assassinated on April 15, 1865) and finally ratified by the necessary 3/4 States in December 1865. This made slavery and other kinds of servitude (other than imprisonment) illegal in the US. Happy Juneteenth! / Regocijamos conjunto con nuestros hermanos y hermanas afroamericanos de nuestra parroquia de que ambos cámaras federales – el Senado y la Casa de deputados – han pasaodo la declaración a crear una feria federal al honor de la liberación de los esclavos afroamericanos que se llama Juneteenth (el 19 de junio). Más, el presidente Biden la ha firmado haciéndola una ley durante esta semana pasada. Ésto conmemora al anuncio de las tropas de la Unión a los últimos esclavos en Galveston Bay, Texas, el 19 de junio 1865,que eran liberados de su esclavitud, unos dos meses despúes de la derrota de la Confederación (el 9 de abril 1865). Se celebra el final de esclavitud en los EE UU, La Proclamación de Emancipación, que declaró que todos los esclavos en el territorio de la Confederación (los estados del sur, incluso Mississippi), fueron liberados de toda cautiverio. Se lo declare el 1 de enero 1863. La enmendación a la Constitución no fue realizado por unos años – por el Senado en abril 1864 y por la Casa de deputados en enero 1865. La firmó el presidente Lincoln en el febrero 1865 (fue asesinado el 15 de abril 1865) y los estados la ratificaron (3/4 de todos para pasar) por el diciembre 1865. Esta enmendación abolió toda clase de esclavitud en los EE UU y lo hizo ilegal. ¡Feliz Juneteenth!

At church, we continue with social distancing at three feet, and those who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear facemasks. Those who are not fully vaccinated or who are not vaccinated at all, including children and youth, are recommended to wear facemasks for your protection and the protection of your family. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and Mass on Holy Days of Obligation ended last weekend. This Sunday, June 20, 2021, members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Manitowoc, WI will be for this year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS), June 21-24, 2021. They will also be distributing a traditional Wisconsin bratwurst lunch after the two Sunday Masses – it will be carry-out. Thanks to their generosity, the VBS is a free program – including a light breakfast and a lunch each day – for pre-school children (4-5 years old) and grade school children, ages 6 – 11 years. / Este domingo, el 20 de junio 2021, miembros de la parroquia san Francisco de Asís en Manitowoc, Wisconsin estarán aquí para la Escuela bíblica de vacaciones (EBV) que se llevará a cabo el lunes hasta el jueves, el 21 hasta el 24 de junio 2021 a la escuela de san Francisco. También, al final de las dos misas del domingo, van a distribuir almeruzos típicos de Wisconsin – las salchichas “bratwurst” – para llevar. Acerca del EBV, es para los niños de kinder, que tienen 4 y 5 años, y para los muchachos de los 6 hasta 11 años. Se incluirá un desayuno ligero y un almuerzo – ¡todo gratuito!
